Tips & best practices for YouTube

  • If the HD option fails, the creator didn't upload a high-res thumbnail — use SD instead.
  • Thumbnails are the creator's artwork: use them for reference or commentary and credit the channel.
  • Pair the thumbnail with the transcript to build notes, summaries or blog posts about a video.

YouTube downloader FAQ

Can I download YouTube videos with SaveVD?

Not at the moment. YouTube blocks the kind of direct downloads SaveVD uses, so we offer thumbnails and transcripts for YouTube. All other supported platforms offer video downloads.

Why is the HD thumbnail missing for some videos?

Older or low-resolution uploads don't have a maxres thumbnail. The SD and HQ versions are always there.

Does it work with Shorts?

Yes. Paste the youtube.com/shorts/… link like any other.

Is SaveVD free?

Yes. SaveVD is free to use with no sign-up, no software to install and no watermark added to your files.

Do I need to install an app or extension?

No. SaveVD runs in your browser on Android, iPhone, Windows, Mac, Linux and ChromeOS. Just paste a link.

Is it legal to download videos?

Downloading is generally fine for your own content, content in the public domain, or content licensed for reuse (e.g. Creative Commons). Re-uploading or redistributing someone else's copyrighted video without permission is not. Always respect the creator and the platform's terms.
